Teens, Adults
Led by Alan Teller, Sam Zakarin
Jewish tradition teaches us the power of l’dor vador—passing stories, wisdom, and memories from generation to generation. In this photography workshop led by Alan Teller and teen artist Sam Zakarin, participants will use their family albums to investigate how images tell stories, prompt memories and become living history. We’ll explore these older photographs to answer questions and see the power seemingly inherent within them. While we’re at it, we’ll talk about the key elements that make for a successful photograph: the thing itself; detail; frame; time; vantage point; humor. Armed with that knowledge, participants, after the workshop, will photograph family members, especially elders, or family rituals or specific objects or moments that can serve to anchor a story and will send those photos to us. We will review them and make a selection. A tremendous number of famous photographers have been Jewish. It likely has to do with our frequent "outsider" status. We tend to see things that others miss. This workshop will encourage participants to use that awareness and capture interesting, provocative, funny images. It will make for a great exhibit at the end of the festival. This workshop will be held at the home of Alan Teller and Jerri Zbiral, which their children refer to as a museum, as it is filled with art on every surface. We will discuss the power of photography, surrounded by great images.
